Buzz off! Bees swarm Times Square hot dog stand

NEW YORK (AP) — A swarm of bees had caused a brief commotion on Tuesday in Times Square in New York City after they made their home atop a hot dog stand. The New York Police Department’s bee keepers unit responded to the scene and safely removed the bees. WABC-TV shows thousands of bees crowding the top of the vendor’s umbrella as a beekeeper sucks them into a hose. In a tweet, the NYPD said that “no tourist was harmed and no bee was left behind.”

Mine detonated in Puget Sound

BROWNSVILLE, Wash. (AP) — Coast Guard and Navy bomb technicians have detonated what they said appeared to be an unidentified mine floating in Puget Sound between Brownsville Marina and Bainbridge Island. The object was reported at about 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Navy says initial inspection of the moored mine showed it had decades of marine growth. At about 5 p.m., Navy divers secured a long line to the device and began towing it with a small boat. It was detonated without incident. Authorities had asked residents along the waterfront to stay inside and away from beaches as a precaution. Brownsville is a few miles south of US Naval Base Kitsap.

Indiana couple weds at ‘A League of Their Own’ stadium

HUNTINGBURG, Ind. (AP) — Two baseball fans have tied the knot at a southern Indiana baseball stadium that features in the 1992 movie “A League of Their Own.” Kristopher Weisheit and Brittany Birk took their vows Saturday at home plate in League Stadium in Huntingburg. Their groomsmen and bridesmaids lined up along the first and third baselines. The wedding was the first ever held at League Stadium. Maintenance foreman Dale Payne says he’s “surprised that nobody had asked before then.” The venue was the home stadium to the Rockford Peaches in the 1992 movie about a women’s baseball league during World War II, starring Tom Hanks and Madonna. It is in this movie that Hanks, playing team manager Jimmy Duggan, yells the immortal line: “There’s no crying in baseball!”
