WMS basketball team cap successful seasons

The Washington Middle School girls basketball teams closed out their seasons at Colstrip on Dec. 8, with the seventh-grade Blue team scoring a 24-20 victory to finish their season with a 9-1 record.

Caitlin Anderson and Hope Stradley led the Blue with eight and seven points respectively.

Kaylee Hirsch added 5 points, Reagan LaPlante contributed three points, and Chloe Sutter scored one point for the winners. The Blue team’s only loss was to Billings.

The seventh grade White team lost a nailbiter 18-16 at Colstrip.

The White got six points from Rayna Ponessa, four from Kayden York, three from Sierra Stevenson, two from Emily Mansfield and one from Erin Doran. The White team finished the season at 2-8, suffering four narrow losses.

Colstrip also got the wins against Washington Middle’s eight-grade squads.

The White team fell 22-18 to finish the season with a 4-4 record.

Skyler David and Grace Gundlach led the squad with four points apiece, while Sally Michaelson added three points. Natalie Haycock, Natalie Mury and Raegen Lange scored two points each.

The eighth-grade Blue team played the last game of the evening, dropping a 54-13 decision to a talented Colstrip team to finish the year with a 3-5 mark.

Carmella Prete paced the Blue with six points, while Ryleigh Simonsen added three points and Harley Meged pitched in with two points. Avery Hansen and Taylor Lee  each made a foul shot.

The seventh-grade Blue and White teams hosted Glendive on Dec. 1, 

Every player on the roster scored for the White team in their 32-9 victory.

Sierra Stevenson netted eight points to lead the White, while Erin Doran and Rayna Ponessa added six points apiece. Hailey Hould contributed four points, while Misty Bennet, Kayden York, Emily Mansfield and Maggie Stone each netted a field goal.

The Blue team notched a narrow 35-31 win over Glendive, leading the entire game.

Kaylee Hirsch poured in 13 points to lead the winners, while Hope Stradley netted 10 points. Caitlin Anderson contributed six points, while Kiala Hirsch, Chloe Sutter and Reagan LaPlante scored two points apiece.

The eighth-grade White team lost 31-15 at Glendive on Dec. 1.

Raegen Lange led the White with six points. Grace Gundlach scored four points, while Haley Harding and Natalie Mury contributed three and two points respectively.

On Dec. 3 at home against Forsyth the seventh-grade White team lost 17-11, while the seventh-grade Blue team notched a 35-21 win.

Sierra Stevenson led the White with five points, while Haley Hould, Misty Bennett and Erin Doran each netted two points.

Everyone scored for the Blue team in their 14-point win. Kaylee Hirsch had 8 eight points, and Reagan LaPlante, Hope Stradley and Caitlin Anderson added six points apiece.

Chloe Sutter (4 points), Julianna Carr (3 points), and Kiala Hirsch (2 points) also scored. 

In the nightcap, the eighth-grade Blue team lost 38-18 to Forsyth.

The Blue got six points from Taylor Lee, four points from Harley Meged and two points each from Ryleigh Simonsen, Madi Moore, Haley Harding and Carmella Prete.

Washington Middle’s squads traveled to Baker on Dec. 5.

Baker beat the seventh-grade White team 14-12. Sierra Stevenson led the White with five points, while Kayden York, Erin Doran and Maggie Stone each scored two points. Haley Hould made a free throw.

The eighth-grade White team played Baker twice, notching narrow 26-25 and 27-26 victories.

In the opener Skyler David scored seven points and Sally Michaelson added six points for the White. Naley Harding contributed five points and Natalie Mury scored three points, while Kylie Black and Grace Gundlach netted two points each. Natalie Haycock made a foul shot.  

In the second game Grace Gundlach meshed eight points, Haley Harding scored six  points, and Skyler David, Natalie Mury and Raegen Lange scored four points each. Ryley Bice made a free throw.

The seventh-grade White and Blue teams played Sidney at home on Dec. 6 with the Blue team taking an easy 28-4 win.

Kaylee Hirsch scored a game-high 12 points for the winners, while Chloe Sutter and Julianna Carr netted six points each. Hope Stradley and Caitlin Anderson scored two points apiece. 

The White team fell 11-8 to Sidney. Misty Bennett, Kayden York, Erin Doran and Rayna Ponessa each scored two points for the White. 

Washington Middle’s eighth-grade girls traveled to Sidney on Dec. 6, with both teams scoring impressive wins.

The White won 30-8 behind six points from Natalie Haycock and five points from Kylie Black. Kaylee Merical added four points for the winners, while Skyler David, Grace Gundlach, Sally Michaelson, Haley Harding, Natalie Mury and Raegen Lange contributed two points each. 

The Blue team prevailed 43-30, with a trio of players scoring in double figures.

Harley Meged led the way with 12 points, while Ryleigh Simonsen netted 11 points and Taylor Lee contributed 10 points. Kylie Black added six points to the attack, while Grace Gundlach and Madi Moore pitched in with two points apiece.

“All of the seventh- and eighth-grade girls worked hard all season and improved as individuals and teammates. The girls gave 100 percent at all times and were a joy to have. We are excited to see what their future brings them in basketball,” junior high head coach Tisha Roberts said.
