The choirs of the First Presbyterian and First United Methodist churches will perform a cantata titled “The Song Heard ’Round the World” on Sunday afternoon.

Written by Joseph M. Martin, the cantata features music and melodies that circle the Earth.

“This is a joint venture of the Presbyterian and Methodist church choirs,” said Karen Hawkinson, a member of the First United Methodist Church choir. “The songs range from the traditional ‘Silent Night’ to selections with a Caribbean rhythm. Everything is sung in English.”

The cantata begins at 3 p.m. Sunday in the First Presbyterian Church at 1401 Main St. It is open to the public, free of charge. Refreshments will be served in the church after the performance.

Mohan Raffety and Chuck Sawyer are the coordinators of the cantata. “The Song Heard ’Round the World” incorporates a collection of international folk songs and carols with scripture and narration, which share the story of Christmas.
