Prep volleyball: Cowgirls lose at Laurel

Laurel defeated visiting Custer County District High School 3-1 Thursday in Eastern A Conference girls volleyball action.

The Cowgirls won the first set 26-16 before falling 27-25, 25-19, 26-24 to the Locomotives. Custer County slipped to 0-4 with the loss.

“We played well,” coach Kodi Malnaa said. “We are doing a lot of things right. I feel like like every team plays ‘up’ on us or very well against us.

“These are great battles and are going to keep us hungry all season long.”

Saige Diegel led the Cowgirls with 14 of the team’s 42 kills. Autumn Porter had nine. Diegel also had four of the seven CCDHS aces and had three blocks to share top team honors with four others — Kyra Oakland, Raquel McAuliffe, Dezi Chamberlin and Brooke Leidholt.

Oakland had 13 digs and Porter had 10 (the team had 53). Amanda Beard had 22 of the 34 CCDHS assists and teammate Josie Chapweske had 11.

The Cowgirls’ home opener is at 4 p.m. Saturday against Billings Central.
