Poor 2nd quarter haunts Lady Pioneers

A poor second quarter led to a lopsided loss for the Miles Community College women’s basketball team against Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, on Saturday.

The Lady Pioneers dropped a 76-49 decision, after spotting the Lady Trappers a 28-point lead at the half.

Miles slipped to 11-8 overall and 2-2 in Region IX. Northwest improved to 11-9 and 2-2.

The Lady Pioneers put together two separate runs in the third and fourth quarters, but couldn’t overcome the slow start.

Guard Tia Torio led the Lady Pioneers with nine points.

NWC’s Kira Marlow and Charri McArthur scored a game-high 15 points apiece.

Miles had jumped out to a quick lead as Savannah Weidauer and Kyra Fleharty combined for eight first quarter points and played a big role in the five-point lead heading into the second quarter.

Northwest College surged in the second stanza with a 35-2 edge, taking advantage of 13 Miles turnovers.

The Lady Pioneers shot just 10 percent in the second quarter while the Lady Trappers made half of their shots, including six of nine from behind the three-point arc.

The Lady Pioneers will take on the Gillette College Pronghorns on Wednesday night in Miles City.

Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

The Miles Community College men’s game will follow against Gillette at 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Pioneers are sitting mid-pack in the conference but a win on Wednesday would put them within striking distance of the leaders.
