Pioneers split series against Trinidad State JC

The Miles CC Pioneers hit the road to Trinidad State JC in Colo., over the weekend and ended up splitting the six-game series.

The first game was Friday afternoon with Jake Lowry on the mound for the Pioneers. Lowry would take the eventual 11-5 loss. 

The Pioneers had a good start, jumping to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Trinidad was quick to respond to Miles’ two runs, tacking on two of their own in the bottom of the inning.

The lead stayed with Trinidad after they scored two more in the second, though the Pioneers did close the deficit in the third, 4-3.

Trinidad continued to build on their lead, adding three in the fourth. The Pioneers battled back, adding two in the fifth, but Trinidad wasn’t stopping. They put two more on the board in the sixth, solidifying their 11-5 win.

Trinidad took game two Friday, winning 4-3 over the Pioneers.

Cody Eaton took the loss for the Pioneers, pitching five innings. He walked four, struck out two and allowed all four runs.

The Pioneers started strong, getting the 1-0 lead in the second. They added a run at the top of the third, extending their lead to 2-0. Trinidad came back, scoring one of their own in the third.

Trinidad took the lead in the fifth, scoring two more and another in the sixth.

Taylor Carson did all he could to give the Pioneers a boost, but it wasn’t enough to get past Trinidad.

Saturday the Pioneers turned things around and took the first game of the day from Trinidad, 9-3.

Ryan Absher shut down Trinidad while he was on the mound. Trinidad managed just one hit off Absher, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out three.

Chance Lujan recorded the win for the P’s. He allowed three runs over four innings, striking out three, walking two and surrendering four hits.

Trinidad jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Pioneers answered hard in the second, scoring three runs on Alex Goodman, Trinidad’s starting pitcher. The Pioneers followed in the third, adding two more to their growing lead.

The Pioneers scored three in the fourth, and Trinidad battled in the bottom of the inning to add two of their own. They just couldn’t get on top of the Pioneers.

The Pioneers kept playing well Saturday, taking the second game of the day, 13-7.

Trinidad started off strong, scoring three in the first and two more in the second. Things looked dire for the Pioneers early.

They turned it around in the third, having an explosive 10-run inning. They scored on a two-run double by Ian Empey, a two-run double by TJ Booth, a home run by Dakota Crowe, a wild pitch and an RBI single by Empey.

The P’s added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth, securing their lead at 13. Trinidad added one in both the fourth and the sixth, but it wasn’t enough to combat the Pioneers.

Sunday saw the Pioneers and Trinidad hitting the field again for two more games, wrapping up the series.

The Pioneers dropped the first game of the day, 13-3. Trinidad jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers tied it in the second.

Trinidad added another run in the third, and the P’s tied it again, battling back hard against the Trinidad defense.

Unfortunately, Trinidad had a huge 10-run inning in the sixth, finishing the the game.

Michael Garcia was charged with the loss, walking three, and allowing five runs.

The final game of the series was another win for the Pioneers, beating Trinidad 9-3.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, then added four runs in the third. TJ Booth racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Pioneers, homering in the third and singling in the sixth.

The P’s tacked on two more in the fourth, and Trinidad responded with two of their own. It was too little, too late though, and the Pioneers never lost the lead.

They added two more in the sixth, while Trinidad had just one cross the plate.

Ian Empey had the win for the Pioneers. He allowed three earned runs, four hits and two walks, while striking out two over seven innings.
