Pioneers score in class

The term “dumb jocks” simply doesn’t apply at Miles Community College. But “student athletes” certainly does.

Members of MCC’s eight athletic programs are having a championship season in the classroom, MCC athletic directors Jeff Brabant and Chase Tait announced this week.

The school’s 75 student athletes attained a cumulative GPA well above 3.0, which is a B average, in the fall semester.

“This is something special. It doesn’t happen very often and as far as I know, this is the first time in over a decade that the entire department has been above a 3.0,” said Brabant, who is also the school’s head baseball coach.

Bragging rights for the best grades are shared by the women’s basketball team, and the men’s/women’s golf program, which each logged lofty 3.40 GPAs, well above par.

Brabant’s baseball team hit for a 3.24 average, the rodeo teams reined in a 3.17 GPA, and the men’s basketball team put a 3.13 GPA on the board.

“We always tell our guys to set goals, not only on the field but in the classroom. It is a proud moment as a coach when you see that your team has taken pride in taking care of business in the classroom,” Brabant said.

Brabant said that academics take a backseat to athletics for Pioneer players.

“I know I speak for the entire coaching staff at MCC when I say that on-field success is important, but not as important as getting every Pioneer that steps foot on campus onto a path towards success in life,” Brabant said.
