PAT misses costly in Cowboys' loss to Laurel

A pair of two-point conversions proved to be the difference.
Laurel outlasted Custer County District High School 34-30 in Eastern A football action Saturday night in Laurel, handing the Cowboys their second straight loss. Miles City was 0-for-5 on PATs and Laurel was 2-for-5.
Unlike last week’s 20-14 loss to Billings Central in their season opener, this time the Cowboys had the edge in most categories, including time of possession — 32:41 to 15:19. Unfortunately, there are no bonus points for that.
The Cowboys scored the game’s first two touchdowns and led 12-0 after one quarter on a 23-yard reception by Kip Krebsbach from quarterback Gabe Gundlach, who also carried the ball into the end zone for a 1-yard TD.
But the Locomotives, who won 33-22 last week, roared back in the second quarter with two touchdowns just 1:47 apart. Gage Hull connected with Declan Harper for an 83-yard touchdown and then passed 22 yards to Gaje Leischner to tie it at 12.
But CCDHS came right back and Gundlach notched his second TD on a 2-yard run for an 18-12 lead at halftime after the fifth straight conversion attempt failed.
That changed in the third quarter when Hull passed 9 yards to Harper and Leischner caught a PAT pass for a 20-18 Laurel advantage.
Krebsbach scored his second TD on a 37-yard pass from Gundlach to put the Cowboys ahead 24-20. It stayed that way for only 52 seconds, Noah Gunther running to the end zone from 15 yards out and then adding the second — and last — PAT to put the Locomotives ahead 28-24.
It became a 10-point deficit when Ethan Renner scored on a 31-yard run, which was followed by the game’s final scoring play -- a 42-yard passing play from Gundlach to Zach Dinardi with 3:26 to play.
The Cowboys had one more possession, but couldn’t notch the winning TD.
Besides scoring twice on short runs, Gundlach was 11-for-21 passing, good for 208 yards and three touchdowns.
CCDHS had a slight edge in passing (208-195), rushing (168-143) and first downs (19-14).
The Cowboys go for their first victory at home Friday at 7  p.m. against Belgrade, which is 0-2.
