KALISPELL (AP) — Part of a scenic highway in Glacier National Park will be closed for two weeks for maintenance work.

The Flathead Beacon reported Monday that Going-to-the-Sun Road on the west side of the park will be shut down from Sept. 16 to Sept. 29 while crews apply a protective coating.

The closure will extend from Avalanche Creek to Logan Pass, a distance of 16 miles (26 kilometers). The pass, which stands 6,646 feet (2,025 meters) above sea level, will still be accessible from the east side.

Park officials say hikers and cyclists might be allowed to use the closed section if weather and construction allow.

The upper regions of the road are expected to close for the winter in by mid-October.
