MCC’s Torio, Nelson earn all-conference accolades

Sophomore guards Tia Tori and Montenia Nelson had stellar seasons for their Miles Community College basketball programs, and their efforts have been rewarded.

Torio, a Manteca, California native who led the Lady Pioneers to a playoff win this season, was named to the NJCAA North Sub-Region All-Region team.

Nelson, who tied for 17th in the nation in total scoring with 23.7 points per game, was selected for the NJCAA Region IX All-Region second team.

Torio shot 41 percent from the field and nearly 40 percent from behind the three-point line while averaging 13.7 points per game.

She broke the Lady Pioneers’ single-game scoring record, exploding for 42 points on Nov. 19 against Williston State. The previous record of 37 points had been set by Nancy Phillips in the 1985-1986 season.

Nelson, a Wisconsin native, netted 619 points this season, shooting 45 percent from the field and making 66 of 187 three-point attempts.

Nelson was a steady performer for the injury-plagued Pioneers. missing just two games while averaging 32 minutes on the floor per game.

The Lady Pioneers finished the season with a 16-15 record, while the men’s team logged a 12-19 mark.
