The Miles City Mavericks American Legion baseball team split a doubleheader against the Billings Blue Jays at Connors Stadium Tuesday. Miles City started the day out with a 10-5 victory before losing the nightcap 16-2, slipping to 17-15 overall this season.

In the day’s first action the Mavericks outhit the Blue Jays 12-6 en route to a 10-5 victory.

Miles City took advantage of a four-run second inning and a four-run fourth inning to push ahead. The Blue Jays put up one run in the first and third innings and three in the sixth but couldn’t dig themselves out of the hole.

The Mavericks strong hitting carried them. Kayden Hager hit a three-run triple in the second as well as an RBI single in the fourth to lead the way for the Mavericks. Jess Bellows and Cameron Muri both hit doubles with Muri recording two RBIs. Jayden Venable and Carson Hunter each had multiple hits.

“We came out hot at the plate and our pitchers did a good job of holding them down,” Mavericks coach Conner Brown said.

Clay Prell got the win for the Mavericks, pitching five innings while surrendering just five hits and three earned runs. He walked two and struck out two. Dalton Polesky pitched the last two innings, giving up one hit and one run.

Billings used a 10-run first inning littered with mistakes to win the second game 16-2 in five innings. The Mavericks bats couldn’t get going, as Miles City was outhit 9-3.

“In the second game they managed to flip the script on us,” Brown said, noting all you can do is keep trying to find a way and hope the baseball finds a hole.

Kole Lohrke, Danny Anderson, and Jaden Venable each had a hit for Miles City, with Venable recording an RBI.

The Mavericks will host the Billings Cardinals for a Eastern A Conference doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. at Connors Stadium.
