Mavs outscore Billings 25-5 in twinbill sweep

Getting behind 4-0 proved to be no problem for the Miles City Mavericks.

After winning 11-1 in five innings in the opener of the doubleheader, the Mavericks rallied to make it a sweep by beating the Billings Blue Jays 14-4 in American Legion baseball Tuesday at Connors Stadium in Miles City.

“We started off slow, but I wasn’t worried about it,” said Miles City catcher Jess Bellows, who followed his brother Jared’s triple with one of his own during a nine-run rally to end the second game in the sixth inning after trailing by four.

“It was a good win, to come back and 10-run them is always a good thing,” Jared Bellows said.

The Blue Jays took advantage of four walks and two singles to score their four runs in the first inning against starter Kayden Hager. But reliever Nathan Zord got out of a jam in the second inning and shut down the visitors the rest of the way to earn the win.

Jess Bellows singled with one out, stole second and scored on Zord’s single to break a 4-4 deadlock in the fifth. Then the Mavericks scored nine times in the sixth, highlighted by the back-to-back triples by the Bellows brothers.

“Crooked numbers, that’s what it’s all about,” Miles City coach Jake Mills said. “We finally put it together with nine guys in a row scoring.”

The Mavericks outhit Billings 13-6 with Jared Swope leading the way with three singles. Zord also had two hits.

The rally delighted Mills.

“You’re never out of a game,” he said. “You minimize the damage and keep it at that, and we’re going to come out all right.”

There was no problem in Game 1 when the Mavericks scored in every inning, including two in the first, four in the second and three in the fourth.

Winning pitcher Clay Prell went the distance, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two. He helped himself with a two-run single in the first and later doubled.

“I was missing my spots here and there, but my outfielders made plays when I did (miss),” Prell explained. “Plus the infield played well, too.”

Jared Bellows doubled and singled twice, driving in four runs, as Miles City banged out 14 hits. Nathan Regan doubled and singled twice and Mason Dinardi and Swope added two hits apiece.

The Mavericks will be the host team in an eight-team tournament starting Thursday morning at Connors Stadium.
