Marvin L. Nelson

Marvin L. Nelson, 88, of Bozeman, passed away January 11, 2018.

Marvin was born in Miles City on October 10,1929 to Gerhart J. and Anna E. Nelson who were early homesteaders from Iowa. Marvin was the third of four boys; Gary, Sylvan L. and Burton H. Nelson. He was raised on the outskirts of Miles City in an area known as “The Island”, formed by the Yellowstone and Tongue Rivers. Marvin attended elementary and high school in Miles City and played high school football, army basketball in Germany and independent baseball.

Marvin attended U of M, majoring in geology, graduating in 1954. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Ft. Ord, CA, Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and Augsburg, Germany. Returning from Europe, Marvin went to work in the oil industry on the gulf coast drilling rigs analyzing cuttings and gases. He returned to Montana and attended graduate study at MSU.

In 1960, Marvin began his career with the Montana Department of Highways and on one of his many trips to Miles City, he met the “prettiest girl in town”, RoAnn Thomas. They were married in 1961 and he adopted RoAnn’s son, Brad. They were later blessed with daughter, Valerie. Marvin built his family a home on Magpie Bay, dragging kids behind a boat in the summer and a Volkswagen in the winter. After retirement in 1987, Marvin became a consultant for several engineering firms in Phoenix, AZ, Virginia Beach, VA and Palmdale, CA and settled in Bozeman to be near his daughter’s family.

Marvin is preceded in death by his wife, RoAnn; his son, Brad, his parents; and his brothers.  He is missed by his daughter, Valerie (Jeff) Jorgenson, and his favorite grandkids, Jake and Jessica. Marvin was a wonderful ‘Uncle Marv’ to several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place, and, per his wishes, no services are planned. Any memorials can be made to the donor’s choice. Marvin was especially fond of Eagle Mount of Bozeman.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.
