Most of the winners in the recent Kian and Friends Triathlon, held at Matthews Recreation Area, were from Miles City.

Larry Nayes, Ben Sharp and Staci Ketchum, all of Miles City, placed 1-2-3 in the solo triathlon, which had 15 competitors. The Miles City tandems of Kevin Ott-Catherine Young and Deborah and Claire Kloster were one-two in the two-person triathlon and the team of Tyson Irion-Ben Rice-Kade Gierke was the lone entry in the three-person triathlon.

Danielle Robinette of Circle won the solo duathlon. Placing second was Diane Molstad of Miles City. Third place went to David Moeller, also of Miles City.

The two-person duathlon winners were Rob and Jenille Brugger of Miles City. Josie Tharp of Miles City teamed with Christean Holen of Wolf Point to finish second and Jimi Feist of Ludlow, South Dakota, and teammate Ashley Warren of Miles City took third.

The triathlon was a fundraiser for the Ramsey Keller Foundation, a Montana organization that raises money to pay for funerals of infants. The event was put on by Amanda Gustad, who isn’t certain if the triathlon, which featured biking, running and rowing, will become an annual event. “It was fun, but it was a lot of work,” she said.

The triathlon and duathlon events attracted 35 entries. The kids fun run had 12 entries, all of whom received medals.

One man in a kayak got caught in a current near the finish of the race on the Yellowstone River. His kayak flipped over and another competitor went to provide aid. However, the kayaker was able to get to shore with his kayak.

“Nobody was hurt,” Gustad said.
