LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Beer a bad idea at kids’ events

Editor,

Why the beer? During the Badlands Bowl High School All-Star Football Game, beer was being sold. At the tournament hosted by the Mavericks, beer was being sold. At the tournament hosted by the Outlaws, beer was being sold. I even announced a Mavericks regular season game where beer was being sold and I was told to “push the Beer Garden.”

What is the reason for selling alcoholic beverages at events where the participants are not of drinking age? Or better yet, who in their right mind would allow such an event to happen? What kind of message are we sending these kids? It’s OK to drink and drive?

My son was killed in a car accident due to drinking and driving. I made a promise by his grave site I would not drink and drive nor would I get into a vehicle where the driver has been drinking. Well, I’m going to take that a step further. I will no longer announce nor attend events where alcoholic beverages are served when the participants are not of drinking age. It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when alcohol has to be the main focus and not the participants.
