HS Track and Field: CCDHS squads earn podium finishes at state meet

LAUREL — There were no individual or team titles for Custer County District High School, but several of the nine Cowboys and 22 Cowgirls combined for several placings in the 2017 State Class A Track Meet Thursday through Saturday at Laurel High School.

Leading the boys qualifiers was Tyler Burk. He had the highest individual CCDHS finish, taking second in the long jump.

The senior leaped 21 feet-11 inches. The winner was Laurel’s Isaiah Renner at 22-5.75.

Keith Vanderlaan, a sophomore, placed third in a time of 11.71 seconds in the 100 meters after running an 11.27 in the prelims. Beaverhead County’s Troy Anderson won in 11.29, followed by Sidney’s Michael McGillis in 11.57.

Vanderlaan also finished sixth in the 200 meters at 24.01. The event winner was Anderson in 22.79.

Burk finished third in the 300 hurdles in 41.04 seconds. Haiden Collins of Fergus won the event in 39.88 seconds.

Burk also was fifth in the 110 hurdles in 16.26 seconds and freshman Aiden Barrows was 10th in :17:20. The winning time was 15.19 by Collins.

Custer County (Burk, Jess Bellows, Caleb Petross, Vanderlaan) was third in the 4x100 relay in 43.55 seconds. 

The event was won by Sidney in 42.96 seconds. CCDHS was just one-hundreth of a second behind runnerup Polson (43.54).

CCDHS (Bellows, Petross, Kaden Stradley and Burk) was 10th in the 4x400 relay, almost eight seconds behind winner Belgrade.

Bellows, a freshman, was fifth in the high jump, clearing 6-2. The winner at 6-4 was Ridge Albright of Corvallis.

Leading the way for the CCDHS girls qualifiers was the 4x400 relay team of sophomore Heather Baker, freshman McKenna Friend, junior Morgan Vosler and senior Myhia Metzenberg who were second with a time of 4:07.41, just over a second behind Corvallis at 4:06.11. 

Metzenberg was fifth in the 200 meters at 27.43 seconds. The winning time was 26.62 by Beaverhead County’s Hayle Sundquist, who also won the 100 meters in 12.66.

Metzenberg also was sixth in the 400 meters in 1:00.54. Winner Pipi Eitel of Belgrade ran it in 58.13 seconds.

Baker was fourth in the 800 meters in 2:20.46. Eitel also won the event in 2:13.93.

Eitel added another two more individual victories in the 1,600 meters in 4:57.07, winning by more than 13 seconds, and the 3,200 in 10:56.69. Vosler, a junior, was fourth in the 1,600 in 5:13.32 and fourth in the 3,200 at 11:46.

In the 300 hurdles, Friend was eighth in 49.63 seconds. The winning time was 45.67 by Dawson County’s Jaley Wyse.

CCDHS senior Savanna Walker was sixth in the shot put with a heave of 35-07.5. The winner was Frenchtown’s Adeline Richardson at 44-4. Walker also was sixth in the discus with a toss of 122-8. Winner Calia Haldorson won by almost 9 feet at 147-11.

In the high jump, won at 5-5 by Frenchtown’s Emilie Hinrichs, CCDHS junior Ashley Venable was eighth, clearing 4-10.
