Girls 4C: Ekalaka cruises, Melstone surprises Terry 47-30

One favorite and one notso-favored were winners Wednesday in the first round of the Montana Class 4C girls basketball tournament at the Custer County District High School gymnasium.

Top-seeded Ekalaka defeated No. 8 Jordan 62-25 and No. 5 Melstone surprised No. 4 Terry 47-30 in the only two games played in the girls division. The other four teams wrap up the first round this afternoon.

Wednesday’s Games

Ekalaka 62, Jordan 25

The winning Bulldogs featured a balanced attack with Whitney Kittelmann and Heather LaBree scoring 11 points each. Claire Callahan added 10, Tori Tooke nine, and Ella Rucker eight.

They led 24-4 after one quarter, 35-16 at halftime and 43-22 after three quarters. Tierney Phillips led Jordan with eight points and Shelby Colbin had six. The Bulldogs had a 5-0 edge in 3-pointers with Tooke hitting three.

Melstone 47, Terry 30

The Broncs were led by Draya Wacker, a 5-foot tall eighth-grader, with 28 points on 9-for-20 shooting from the field. That included a pair of 3-pointers on five attempts. She also was 8-for-11 at the free throw line, and had four rebounds and a blocked shot.

Only two of her teammates added points — Shayla Hough with 12 and Kaigen Roskelley with seven.

The Broncs took a 14-10 lead after one quarter and led 21-16 at halftime. It was 30-21 after the third quarter and the Broncs outscored the Terriers 17-9 in the final quarter.

Loni Kortum led Terry with 12 points, Laiten Lantis added nine and Genna Schroeder seven.
