Gillette College snaps MCC women’s winning streak

It finally happened: The Miles Community College women’s basketball team lost a game.

For the first time in two months — actually Nov. 10 — the Pioneers fell 85-83 to Gillette College in overtime on Wednesday. The last loss was at Lake Region in Devils Lake, North Dakota.

The Gillette men’s team had an easier time, dispatching the MCC men 103-68. 

The women’s loss in Gillette came despite 31 points by Paula Rosello Mateu on 11-for-30 shooting, including five 3-pointers.

Dakota Dosch had 18 points, Patrycja Jaworska added 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers; and Kyra Flaherty scored 12. Kylee Meredith had four points and Bre Moea’l had two.

The Pronghorns led 21-16 after one quarter and the Pioneers took a 45-37 lead at halftime. Gillete gained the advantage in the third quarter, outscing MCC 19-9 to go ahead 56-54 and regulation ended in a tie at 72.

Among the statistics was a wide discrepency in fouls — 26 for MCC and 14 for the hosts. Gillette also was credited with 50 rebounds, compared to 41 by the Pioneers, who were led by Dosch with 11 and Mateu with eight. Jaworska had 11 assists.

Gillette (7-6 overall, 1-0 Region IX) won despite committing 33 turnovers; MCC had 17.

The Pioneers (14-3, 0-1) host Casper College at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The men’s teams play at 7:30.

The Gillette men improved to 17-0 by defeating the the Pioneers 103-68.

The Pronghorns, coached by former MCC coach Shawn Neary, jumped ahead 50–26 at the half and didn’t let up.

Erie Olonade scored 18 points and Andrea Lo Biondo had 14. Also scoring for the Pioneers were Daquazemarr Wyche and Jonathan Tchuisse with eight apiece, Jaxon Hinch with six, Evan Harrell with five, Gavin Gundlach and Joey Lodine with four each, and Perion Little with one.

All five of Gillette’s starters were in double figures. The team’s top scorer was Ted McCree with 22 off the bench.

The Pioneers (6-11) host Casper College, Region IX’s top-rated team, at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
