First pitch: CABA World Series starts Thursday

Rather than a 16-team CABA 14U World Series here at two Miles City baseball venues, the event will feature seven teams from the Northwest Region.

Several teams that were expected to play opted not to travel here, thus reducing the field significantly.

“Teams from far away didn’t want to travel when they had (qualified) for the tournament,” said Wendy Warren of the tournament committee. “It should still be a fun time with lots of games.”

The Miles City 14U Outlaws, who have a 32-25-1 record, will be the host team. In a recent game, the Outlaws 14U defeated the Billings Crushers 3-0 with Dylan Nieskens pitching the one-hit shutout, going 2-for-3 a the plate and driving in a run. He struck out seven and walked two.

The Outlaws also topped the Casper (Wyoming) Badgers 13-1, 16-1 and 17-8 last weekend. The last loss was 5-4 to Sheridan (Wyoming) Calvary last Saturday.

Monty Frare, coach of the Outlaws Varsity, likes the way the 14U team has improved in its second year.

“”Coach Nelson Walker has done a tremendous job,” Frare said. “The boys work hard, they play hard and they’ve learned to win. Last year they took it on the chin and it took them a year to learn how to win.”

Competition starts Thursday at 3:30 p.m. with Glendive facing the Casper (Wyoming) 13’s at Connors Stadium and at 4 p.m. with Montana 406 Elite playing the Casper Young Guns at Tedesco Field.

The opening ceremonies and a skills competition is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. at Connors Stadium, followed at 8 p.m. by the third game with the Outlaws playing En Fuego of Seattle, which is expected to be the tourney favorite.

The seventh team, which is idle Thursday, is the Billings Crushers.

All teams are guaranteed six games in pool play and a minimum of one game in the single-elimination format that follows. The semifinals and championship games are scheduled Monday at Connors Stadium.

Games also will be played at Tedesco Field, home of the Outlaws. Frare’s team, by the way, will play Seattle En Fuego in three games following the tourney. Games are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Proceeds from those games will go to the fireman’s fund to aid in the Montana fires. Two pickup trucks from Notbohm Motors will be at the ballparks to accept donations for the firefighters throughout the tournament.

Frare said he was disappointed with the dropouts for the tourney, but promised better things for the future.

“This needs to be corrected,” Frare said he told CABA officials. “We’re going to get there and this tournament will impact the city going forward.”
