Cowgirls swept by Central but stay alive for bye

 

The Custer County District High School Cowgirl volleyball team suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of Billings Central on Saturday in Billings. But the Cowgirls are still in line to be the second seed in the upcoming Eastern A Divisional tournament, and get the bye that goes with it.

The Cowgirls were beaten 25-19, 25-15 and 25-18 on Saturday. They dropped to 6-3 in the Eastern A. They are still one game ahead of Sidney, who still must play Laurel and Billings Central this weekend. The Cowgirls will wrap up the regular season on Friday night when they host Hardin at the CCDHS gym.

In Billings on Saturday, the Cowgirls led each of the three games early on, but were unable to slow down the powerful Lady Rams, who remain unbeaten in conference play.

The Cowgirls had 26 kills in the match, led by Shaylee Singleton with eight and Jessie Beard with seven. Catherine Nalewaja had 12 assists. Singleton served three of the six aces.

Defensively, Tori Swope had nine digs and Stevie Murphy had seven. Beth Sutter led the team with two blocks.

In the JV match on Saturday, the Cowgirls won the final three games to pull off the stunning win.

Central won the first game 26-24 and the second game 25-17 to take control of the match. The Cowgirls rallied to win the third game 15-13 and the fourth game 15-6 to force a decisive fifth game. Regulation wasn't enough to determine a winner, and the Cowgirls had to pull away with a 19-17 win to take the match.

The Cowgirls had 42 kills in the match, led by Jenna Swope with 13. Swope also led the team with 28 digs. Makena Ellingson had 28 assists, Halie Warren had two blocks and Abbie Larson and Ellingson each served two aces.

In the freshmen game, the Cowgirls were swept 25-18, 25-15 and 15-11.

Ally Coleman led the team with five kills, Tori Ogolin had seven assists, Mariah Beehler had 16 digs and Maddissen Hill and Beehler each had two aces.
