It took until the second quarter for the Custer County District High School girls basketball team to take control against Sidney.

But the Cowgirls, now 3-0 this season against the 0-19 Eagles, pulled away to a 29-13 halftime lead en route to a 56-22 victory in a play-in game of the Montana Class A Eastern/Central Super Divisional girls basketball tournament in Billings.

Five hours later, the Cowgirls faced undefeated Havre, the top-ranked team in Class A, and fell 65-45.

In their win over Sidney, Madison Rask led the Cowgirls with 19 points, going 7-for-9 from the field and making all five of her free throws.

McKenzie Taylor added nine points, Kyra Oakland six, Bailee Murnion and Dezi Chamberlin five each, Morgan Johnstone four, Mack Rask three and McKenna Friend two.

CCDHS had a 39-29 rebounding advantage with Oakland leading all players with eight.

The Cowgirls shot 47 percent (22-of-47, but were only 1-of-9 on 3-pointers). They held Sidney to 22 percent shooting (8-of-36) from the field.

Against Havre, now 19-0, the 9-10 Cowgirls were behind 21-12 after one quarter and 37-20 at halftime. Havre outscored CCDHS 17-16 in the third quarter and 11-9 in the fourth.

The Rask sisters each scored 13 points, combining to shoot 11-for-21 from the field. Mack Rask had two 3-pointers and Madison Rask had one. Kyra Oakland added nine points, McKenzie Taylor had three; Bailee Murnion, Dezi Chamberlin and Morgan Johnstone had two each and McKenna Friend had one.

The Blue Ponies showed their balance and talent with four players in double figures. They also had a 31-20 advantage in rebounds.

The Cowgirls shot a respectable 45 percent (18-of-40) from the field and made half of their eight 3-point attempts, but Havre shot a staggering 58 percent (26-of-45, including 6-of-15 on 3-pointers).

The loss puts CCDHS into the consolation bracket needing three more wins to earn a state tourney berth next week in Great Falls.

The top four placers advance.

The Cowgirls face Park (Livingston) at 8 p.m. today in their first loser-out game.
