Cowboys, Cowgirls post easy wins over St. Labre

If two easy victories can get your basketball team rolling, the Custer County District High School teams had the remedy Saturday afternoon.

The Cowboys beat St. Labre 73-35 at the MCC Centra while, at the same time, the Cowgirls were winning 63-34 at St. Labre in Ashland.

Shawn Beeler, seldom used this season, his first after transferring from Forsyth, notched his first three points of the season.

“I think I was more [involved] because I played against St. Labre the last three years when I was at Forsyth,” Beeler said.

He hopes a game like this will boost the team’s morale.

“It gives us a confidence boost,” he said, adding that things are different in the Cowboys camp. “We started a new practice regime with a lot of new plays.”

Gabe Gundlach got back on track, scoring a game-high 25 points — all but seven coming in the first half.

Steven Ray added 14 points, Keith Vanderlaan 11, Kaden Stradley and Quest Savery had five each, Clay Prell and Jess Bellows four each and Jayden Venable two.

Making it easier was a productive 24-for-30 shooting effort from the free throw line.

The Cowboys led 24-8, 47-16 and 65-26 at the quarter breaks.

“We played well early” said CCDHS coach Houston Finn. “We’ve been working on communicating better, also our defensive intensity.

“We’ve gotten a lot better the past four days. If we keep progressing, we’ll be OK.”

The Cowgirls had a balanced attack, scoring in double digits in each quarter.

Unofficial stats showed Bailee Murnion had 14 points to lead the Cowgirls, while Kyra Oakland scored 11 points and Dezi Chamberlin added 10.

Ashley Venable and Mack Rask scored eight points each and Madison Rask added six, McKenna Friend had four and McKenzie Taylor 2.

“We had a slow start, then we got some points off the press,” coach Chase Haughian said.

It was 27-12 at halftime and 43-24 through three quarters.

The Cowgirls, who have won two straight to improve to 4-6, play twice this weekend, at Hardin at 6 p.m. Friday and at Sidney at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Cowboys who are 3-6, also play at Hardin, the game scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and are home against Sidney at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
