This Christmas season, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invites everyone to participate in its “Light the World” campaign which begins on Friday and continues through Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

According to a news release from the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the name of this initiative is “Light the World” because Jesus Christ is the light of the world (John 8:12) and Jesus Christ taught that people are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).

As His example is followed, “that light will burn within us and will light the way for others,” according to President Thomas S. Monson, worldwide leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The initiative focuses on sharing the light of Jesus Christ through simple acts of service. Latter-day Saints feel it is important to treat others with love and kindness, as Jesus taught. They hope the celebration inspires individuals, families, youth groups and congregations to emulate Jesus Christ’s example of service as is depicted in the holy scriptures.

Complete details including a downloadable advent service calendar  — “In 25 Ways, over 25 Days” are available at mormon.org. Each day the calendar focuses on a different Christlike behavior and provides suggestions for patterning our service after Christ’s example.

Participants may share their experiences as a giver or receiver of Christlike caring through social media by using the hashtag #LIGHTtheWORLD.
