Carlon ‘Carl’ Nils Carlson

Carl passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2018, after a long battle with cancer.  He was surrounded by his family.

He was born in Beach, North Dakota on August 13, 1956, to Robert and Edith Carlson. He had 6 siblings: 4 sisters and two brothers. The family moved from Beach to Miles City shortly after Carl was born. He attended elementary and high school in Miles City. His young adult years were spent farming, ranching and working on his yellow Road Runner muscle car. Many hours were spent floating the Yellowstone River, drinking Budweiser and being with friends.

Carl married Marci Heigh in 1983, and 10 months later Amber Grace was born. His career as a greens keeper started in Miles City at the Town and Country Club, and overall would span 20 years in the industry.

In 1988, the family moved to Helena. Carl worked at Green Meadow Golf Course for a few years, then moved on to Fox Ridge when it was being built. He was  instrumental in implementing the design. He thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of maintaining golf courses. Since preparing a golf course for golfers requires waking up early, he often said, “mornings are the best time of the day”. He loved the quiet peaceful mornings, watching the sun come up and mowing the beautiful grounds.

Carl also assisted putting together J Bar E Sod Farm. Carl was an extremely hard working man and loved working outdoors.

Carl enjoyed camping, fishing, tinkering with mowers and older cars. He was a pro-Asparagus hunter. He loved to go out and pick Asparagus and would gather bags full, often to just give it away to friends and family. He was even out in the ditch with his walker after a major surgery a few years back, because he enjoyed it so much and just could not wait to get out there.

He loved to help his daughter with anything he could, and spent the last few years doing just that. From building stairs and garden boxes to gathering wood, hauling garbage, or whatever he could, he loved to help and spend time with her. Carl also enjoyed hanging out with his friends, and even took a trip to Sturgis this summer with a lifelong childhood friend, Tim and his girlfriend, Delaine. Something way out of his comfort zone, but enjoyed it very much. He also took several trips to Miles City in the last few years to connect with old friends and see family.

Carl had a great sense of humor, he would randomly crack jokes. He also loved watching TV and movies. A person could ask him about a movie and he’d tell you a one-liner from it.

Carl was predeceased by his father, Robert Carlson, mother, Edith Ebert, sisters, Doreen Robertson, Maxine Leatherberry, Debbie Carlson, and his brother, Claude Carlson.

Carl is survived by his daughter, Amber G. Carlson (Jake), girlfriend, Delaine Hartzell, brother, Farron Carlson (Linda), sister, Robin Leatherberry (Raymond), and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will take place this spring in Miles City, Montana. Please visit www.aswfuneralhome.com to offer the family a condolence or to share a memory of Carl.
A special thanks to the staff, nurses and Dr. Weiner at St. Peters Cancer Treatment Center, Harborview Medical Center and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance for the wonderful care they provided to Carl over the last several years.
