If barrel racing is your favorite rodeo sport, you’re in for a free treat this weekend at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds.

It’s the third two-day barrel racing-only event of the season for the Mid-River Communications Barrel Daze. It follows similar performances, both in June at Sidney and Silesia. The final event will be Oct. 21-22, also in Silesia.

Producer Lana Tibbets, who also is a competitor, said there should be between 150 and 180 barrel racers vying for prizes totaling between $17,000 and $20,000 — depending on the number of entries

“We had to move it from June to September, so we’ll see,” Tibbets said. “We’re excited about our new sponsors and the new date.”

The competition starts Saturday at noon and Sunday at 10 a.m. following the morning church service, which begins at 7:30 a.m. at the fairgrounds.

When last held in Miles City in 2015, prizes paid out totaled more than $26,000 with Carrie Murnion of Jordan pocketing $2,700 by winning the Open 1D. Carmel Wright earned more than $1,00 by winning three races.

The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) event offers six events both Saturday and Sunday. There are 16 Miles City sponsors.

Barrel Daze was established in 2008 and has paid out more than $600,000 over the nine years.

“We are excited about the future of each of these great events,” Tibbets said.

Each race is approved by the WPRA and three other organizations — Better Barrel Races (BBR), Northwest Barrel Racing Championships (NWBRA) and The U Barrel Racing Championships (UBRC).

Tibbets said the BBR has more than 15,000 members, the WPRA has 3,000, NWBRA 400 and UBRC 150.

“We were able to start Barrel Daze with a bang and continue on each as annual events,” Tibbets said.
