Badland Brawlers roller derby team forms in Miles City

The Miles City Badland Brawlers (MCBB), a newly formed roller derby team, will host its first-ever event on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Agri-Sports Complex in Miles City.

The Brawlers are a local all-girls roller derby team that was founded by Shayna Swanson.

Swanson, a skater from Wyoming, formed the group after moving to Miles City last year.

The event will include female skaters from Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming.

According to Swanson, there are 19 girls signed up to participate. A full team has 15 girls on the roster.

The bout will pit the veterans versus the “freshmeat.” Swanson said the veterans are more-experienced skaters while the “freshmeat” are those who are just starting.

Freshmeat skaters are those who “haven’t been tenderized yet,” said Swanson.

According to Swanson, with such a small number of girls signed up both teams consist of varying abilities.

In addition to the bout on Saturday night the Brawlers will be hosting a boot camp at 8 a.m on Saturday, also at the Agri-Sports Complex. The boot camp costs $15 but gains attendees free entry to the bout.

According to Swanson, the team will provide everything but a mouth guard to boot camp participants. At boot camp the attendees will be taught how to skate, the rules of roller derby, and more of the basics.

The Brawlers is hoping to make this an annual event.

“We’re really excited about it. We’ve been finalizing the details for the last two weeks,” said Swanson.

The Brawlers currently have four girls as full-time members, and are hoping that this event will help drum up interest in roller derby in the community. The other skaters in Saturday’s bout are visitors, not team-members.

Tickets cost $5, or $4 with a canned food donation. For more information go to
