DeVos faces withering criticism in House hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) — Education Secretary Betsy DeVos faced tough questions from House Democrats on Tuesday on gun control, racial bias and civil rights as she sought to defend funding cuts for her agency.

DeVos’ testimony in front of the House Appropriations subcommittee got so tense at certain moments that the chairman made a point of thanking DeVos for her poise when he concluded the meeting.

Hogwarts, Zoolander among entries for new Utah school names

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Thousands of submissions have been entered online to name new schools in Eagle Mountain and Lehi.

Some ideas aimed to honor people, some drew inspiration from geographical features in the area and some tried humor, The Daily Herald reported Thursday.

One resident suggested the new Eagle Mountain high school should be called The Derek Zoolander School for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Want to Do Other Stuff Good Too.

Another wanted it to be named Hogwarts High School.

Montana students offered college scholarships

HELENA (AP) — Montana GEAR UP recently notified 95 seniors, representing 23 Montana high school, that they had earned the Montana TRIO Achievement Grant.

According to a press release, the Montana TRIO Achievement Grant is a onetime award of $1,500. The grant may be used to cover the student’s cost of attendance at any U.S. accredited college or university that awards an associate’s degree or higher.

MSU Billings presents Showcasing Scholarship program

Montana State University Billings female faculty members will present the third annual Showcasing Scholarship program on Wednesday, March 28 from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., according to a press release.

The program gives overviews of their current research projects and will be held in Liberal Arts building room 205.

Sponsored by the Women’s Faculty Caucus and supported by the Women’s and Gender Studies Center, the program features women faculty from a wide variety of disciplines who will present their research in 10-minute presentations.

DCC offers Buccaneer Excellence Program

Dawson Community College is excited to offer various scholarships through the Buccaneer Excellence Program for students who will attend DCC Fall 2018. DCC will award academic scholarships to Montana residents who graduated from high school during or after 2016 and will submit an application for Fall 2018 semester.

According to a press release, DCC recognizes a wide array of excellence. DCC offers five scholarship categories.

Sacred Heart names 88 students to Honor Roll

The names of 88 students at Sacred Heart Parish School were listed on the second quarter honor roll for the 2017-2018 school year. Of those students, 15 received 4.0 (straight A) grade point averages for the quarter, according to a news release from the school. They are Rylee Smith, 7th grade; Taylor Gallo, 6th grade; Ellie Goff, Ella Hogan, Sam Muggli and Greta Tooke, 5th grade; Brennan Holmen, 4th grade; Ava Flotkoetter, 3rd grade; Delilah Strong, 2nd grade; and Rori Donnelly, Mya Flotkoetter, Laney Frieboes, Ted Jeffers, Cody McPherson and Adelaide Strong, 1st grade.
