Old movies advertisments bring the past alive

One of the things I love about doing Stardust is not just reading the old news but reading the old advertisements in the newspapers. I especially love ads for the movies.

Once they were invented, of course.

One hundred years ago, William S. Hart was starring in “Wolves of the Rail,” which he also directed. It was showing at the Liberty Theatre. You could also enjoy a “pictograph” and animated cartoon. I think the pictograph was still pictures with titles slide, probably a precursor of the mid-20th century newsreel or travelogue.

For nine years my husband and I have led an annual group hike into the Terry Badlands and Natural Bridges, located just northwest of Terry. The hike draws people from all over the state and region. We have had people from the area who have never been to the Terry Badlands and from as far away as New York, California, England, and even Israel.

Most of the bull exhibitors on Miles City’s Main Street Friday were here for glory more than gold — the cash will come later, they hope. The Cowtown Breeders Show and Craft Expo puts a new wrinkle on breeding stock merchandising, particularly for this time of year. Jack McNamme, a Miles City Angus breeder, filled his pen with bulls that have already been sold.

“We’re just trying to put our program in front of people.”

On Sunday, I attended the Super Bowl, along with my father, my business partner and the president of our company. It was an amazing event. That wasn’t just because the game was terrific — although it was. It was because for all the competitive fire, for all the passion and excitement, one feeling permeated the stadium in the freezing wilds of Minnesota: love.

Wife of man with Parkinson’s wants to start dating others

DEAR ABBY: I’m a 72-year-old married woman. My husband has atypical Parkinson’s and can no longer talk or walk.

I exercise six days a week, but I need someone to talk to, to share life with. I tell my husband what I do each day, but of course, there is no feedback. He’s at home, and we have 24-hour care.

The Cowtown Beef Breeders Show and Craft Expo gets under way at 10 a.m. Friday. There will be 29 pens of yearling bull breeding stock on display on Main Street and 45 tables of crafts and merchandise at the Eagles Club.

Kathy Doeden of Miles City is one of three Montanans honored by Gov. Marc Racicot for their efforts to protect the state’s historical resources.

Doeden received the 1991-92 Montana Historic Preservation Award for her volunteer work, including acting as the Miles City community preservation officer.
