Albert Donald “Bert” Winkley, 80, died Saturday, May 17, 2014. From December 2013 to the time of his death, Mr. Winkley thoroughly enjoyed the care and attention given him at Black Hills VA Health Care Center in Fort Meade, S.D.
Mr. Winkley was born on April 20, 1934, to Jean and Dorothy Klein Winkley in Ekalaka.
Raised in rural Carter County, Mr. Winkley left Montana in 1953 to join the Navy where he performed sea duty aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt and USS Ashland. He was honorably discharged with the rank of MML2 (Machinist Mate General 2nd Class).
Mr. Winkley is survived by two brothers, George (Mamie) and Jim (Audrey); four sisters, Helen, Betty, Clara and Barbara; his daughter, Nancy, and granddaughter, Nicohlette; his son, Donald, and granddaughter, Madelyn; along with a host of much loved family members and friends.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Sam, Chuck and Matt; and one sister, Rustee.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2014, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, S.D. Burial will follow with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard at the Black Hills National Cemetery. Attendees will then gather at the Veterans of Foreign Wars for refreshments and a time of visiting.
