The freshmen girls basketball team at Custer County District High School has had a learning season so far. They currently sit at 2-8 on the season.
The Cowgirls opened the year with a 40-33 loss against Hardin. The Cowgirls were outscored 10-3 in the second quarter, proving to be the difference. Mariah Beehler and Madissen Hill led the team with 10 and nine points, respectively.
In their next game, the Cowgirls bounced back with a 54-36 win over Sidney. The teams were tied at 27 going into the fourth quarter when the Cowgirls exploded to outscore the Lady Eagles 27-9. Kylee Licht led the Cowgirls with 13 points. Beehler, Hill and Myhia Metzenberg each had nine and Sarah Moore added eight.
In the first game of January, the Cowgirls lost 44-38 to Class AA Billings Senior. Senior led 24-22 at halftime and then outscored the Cowgirls 9-1 in the third quarter to take control of the game. HIll and Metzenberg each had 15 points to lead the Cowgirls.
Against Laurel, the Cowgirls got behind early and lost 41-26. Laurel jumped out to a 19-3 lead after the first quarter and cruised from there to the win. Beehler had 10 points and Metzenberg had nine to lead the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls then suffered a tough 41-39 loss in Dickinson. Playing under North Dakota rules- a 40-second shot clock and two halves instead of four quarters- for the first time, the Cowgirls took a little time adjusting. They trailed 30-18 at halftime, but rallied to outscore the Lady Midgest 21-11 in the second half, but it wasn’t quite enough. HIll and Beehler led the Cowgirls with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Against Billings West, the Cowgirls fell behind 20-9 after the first quarter and were unable to recover, losing 43-22. Licht had eight points to lead the Cowgirls.
At home against St. Labre, the Cowgirls couldn’t overcome a slow start and fell 48-27. St. Labre led 17-4 after the first quarter and 29-7 at halftime. Metzenbergh had six points to lead the Cowgirls, while Licht and Grace Cadenas each had five.
Last Friday, the Cowgirls were held scoreless in the first quarter against Hardin and couldn’t reocver in the 47-35 loss. Metzenberg had eight points to lead the Cowgirls. Licht, Beehler and Moore each had six.
On Saturday night in Sidney, the Cowgirls nearly pulled off the comeback, but came up short 28-27. The Cowgirls led 7-3 after the first quarter, but were ouscored 14-4 in the second. They trailed 21-15 after three quarters and outscored the Lady Eagles 12-7, but not quite enough. Licht had seven points, while Metzenberg and Beehler each added six.
Last night against Dickinson, the Cowgirls ended their slide with a 39-13 win over the Lady Midgets. The Cowgirls led 10-4 after the first quarter and took a 19-5 lead into halftime. They outscored the Lady Midgets 18-4 in the third quarter to put the game well out of reach.
Metzenberg had nine points to lead the Cowgirls. Ally Coleman added six.
The Cowgirl frosh will be at Billings Senior on Friday and will host Glendive on Saturday night. The Cowgirl frosh will get going at 4 p.m.
