WMS 7th-grade girls get their season started
The Washington Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball teams have been busy to get their seasons started. The Blue team is 5-0, the Gold team is 1-3 and the White team is 1-1.
The Blue Broncettes opened the season with a 29-9 win over Broadus. Madison Rask led the team with 11 points, while Kyra Oakland added eight. Morgan Johnstone and Amber Taylor each had four and Sandra Michaelson tossed in two points.
Against Colstrip, the Blue team won 24-12. Rask again led the team with 10 points. Dez Chamberlin had four and Josie Chapweske and Alli Collins each had three. Oakland and Brooke Leidholt each added two points.
In Billings, the Blue team earned a 38-24 win thanks to a strong defensive effort in the second half. Rask had 14 points and Johnstone added 10 to lead the Blue team. Chamberline and Oakland each had five and Collins added four.
In their next game, the Blue team outscored Forsyth 24-6 in the second half to run away with a 35-12 win. Rask and Collins each had 10 and Johnstone added six. Channing Ellingson, Oakland, Taylor and Leidholt each had two points and Chapweske added one.
In their last reported game, the Blue team beat Glendive 36-16. Rask led the team with nine points and Chamberlin had seven. Collins scored six, Johnstone had five and Chapweske added three points. Ellingson, Taylor and Maritza Cadenas each added two points.
The Blue team is coached by Tisha Roberts.
The Gold team opened their season with a 30-11 loss to Broadus. McKenzie Jerrell had four points, Zaylena Gamboa had three while Kinley Burian and Riley Anderson each had two.
In Forsyth, the Gold team made a solid comeback bid in the second half, but couldn’t overcome the halftime deficit and lost 28-19. Gamboa led the team with 10 points while Amy Haughian and Anderson each had four points and Mikenna Gruba added one.
After a pair of losses, the Gold team cracked into the win column with a convincing 41-9 win over Glendive.
Gamboa had a big game with 14 points to lead a balanced offensive effort. Haughian had eight, Gruba had seven and Sam Fleming tossed in six points. Jerrel scored four and Saige Diegel added two.
The Gold team played a close game in Baker, but came up short 18-15. Gamboa led the team with five points and Anderson had four. Fleming, Gruba and Jerrel each tossed in two points.
Other members of the Gold team are Maci Moore, Kelly Rehm, Kaitlynn Stevens, Jazzmin Watson, Haylea Conley and Abby Stone. They are coached by Ashlee Hyatt and Charli Mader.
The White Broncettes opened their season with a 22-16 win over Colstrip. Maritza Cadenas was the leading scorer with eight points, while Zaylena Gamboa and Mikenna Gruba each had four. Ashlyn Marum and Morgan Johnstone each tossed in three points.
In Billings, the White team played close in the first half but ended up losing 32-15. Cadenas led the team with six points. Marum, Johnstone, Haughian and Gamboa each had two and Maci Moore added one.
Other members of the White team are Saige Diegel, Sam Flemming, Amber Taylor and Sandra Michaelson. They are coached by Hyatt and Mader.
