The Miles Community College Pioneer baseball team enjoyed a good weekend, beating Prairie Baseball Academy five times to run their current winning streak to eight games.

The Pioneers won 4-1 in their only game on Friday evening. On Saturday, the teams played a triple-header, with the Pioneers winning 6-0, 11-5 and 2-0. On Sunday, the teams wrapped up the weekend with a single game, won by the Pioneers 12-0.

“I’m just happy that we got the games in more than anything,” Pioneers Head Coach Jeff Brabant said. “Sometimes it’s good to be able to get outside, play and get better. And we did that this weekend. It’s now getting to the time to get to work on some things, iron some kinks out. I was really happy with how we played.

We pitched better than we have been and offensively, we’ve been really good lately. Overall I was very pleased with how we played.”

With the wins, the Pioneers are now 13-5-1 on the season. They will begin their search for a 14th straight MonDak Conference title this weekend when they will take on Williston State.  They will be at Williston, N.D., on Saturday and will return home on Sunday. Games start at 1 p.m., each day.

The Pioneers enjoyed a tremendous pitching performance from Dakota Cortese, and gave him just enough offense to get the win in the first game of the weekend.

Cortese was fantastic throughout the game, working his way out of trouble on a couple occasions. In the top of the first, he got a double-play to erase a pair of walks. In the fourth, PBA had runners on second and third with one out, but Cortese got a strike out and fly-out to end the threat.

PBA final scratched a run across in the sixth, but by then the damage had been done by the Pioneer offense.

The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the first when Brayden Matheson doubled to bring in Cayden Napierala. They added two more in the fourth on a Brandon Kemp RBI single and Sean O’Connell scored on a passed ball.

Cortese went all seven innings, striking out a season-high 11 batters. He allowed just three hits and walked four.

Matheson led the Pioneer offense with a 2-4 effort with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Myles Wesener also was 2-4 on the game. Michael Gahan and Kemp each added RBIs.

The Pioneers gave Riley Horn all the run support he would need in the first inning, and the left-hander cruised on the mound for the complete-game shutout.

Wesener scored on a fielders choice in the bottom of the first inning and Horn took it from there.

PBA mustered just three hits off of Horn, but the sophomore never allowed a base runner to reach third base. He struck out four, but coaxed seven ground ball outs and seven flyouts in the game.

The Pioneers did add three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the sixth to put the game away. Wesener led the offense with a 3-4 effort. He also drove in a run and scored once. Zach Cortese and Matheson each doubled in the game.

The Pioneers had to play catch-up in the second game on Saturday, but a big inning in the fourth proved to be enough.

MCC fell behind 4-0 after a long third inning, but were able to scratch a pair of runs across in the bottom of the third to keep the game within reach.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Pioneers sent 13 batters to the plate and took advantage of good base running and one big hit.

The Pioneers scored seven runs in the inning, one coming off a double-steal and another on a passed ball.

Zach Cortese drilled a two-run triple and Gahan added an RBI single in the big fourth inning.

MCC added a pair of runs in the sixth, one coming on a solo home run from Lorenzo Webb and another on a Wesener triple.

Webb went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to help lead the Pioneer offense. Wesener and Cortese each had three hits. Cortese drove in three and Wesener had two RBIs.

Kyle Barras earned the win on the mound, going five innings and allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked two. Ty Church and Brady Derheim each threw an inning of relief.

The Pioneers didn’t get much going offensively in the final game on Saturday, but Michael Gahan didn’t need much.

MCC scored just two runs on seven hits, but Gahan was fantastic on the mound, shutting the Dawgs out for the second time on Saturday.

In the top of the first, Gahan walked the leadoff batter, who would get as far as third base. Following that walk, Gahan sat down the next 15 batters in a row before allowing a leadoff single in the sixth.

The Pioneers gave Gahan the lead in the bottom of the first when Tyler Reitz doubled and later scored on a fielders choice.

Gahan worked out of a jam in the top of the sixth and the Pioneers rewarded him with an insurance run in the bottom of the frame. Three straight singles from the bottom of the Pioneers order produced the second run of the game and Gahan worked around a hit batter in the top of the seventh to preserve the shutout.

Gahan allowed just two hits, both coming in the sixth, and walked just one. He struck out five and was aided by a Pioneer defense that committed no errors.

Reitz was the lone Pioneer to have multiple hits, going 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

MCC 12, PBA 0

The Pioneers put the final game of the weekend away early, scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning to put an emphatic end to the weekend.

MCC sent 16 men to the plate in the first inning, scoring 11 runs on just five hits. The Pioneers took advantage of eight walks in the inning.

Matheson had the big hit in the inning, smacking a grand slam in his second at-bat of the inning. Gahan also had a two-run double in the frame.

Matheson finished the game 3-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Gahan was 3-3 with two RBIs and a double. Wesener went 2-3 with an RBI and a triple and Andy Scott hit a two-run home run.

Brad Rook threw a five-inning shutout, allowing just three hits and walking one. He struck out two.
