The Pioneer offense hadn’t quite awoken in the first game of the weekend, and they had to hold on through a rough seventh inning to get the win.

MCC scored single runs in the second and fifth innings and scored two in the fourth to help build a 4-0 lead. And the way Dakota Cortese was pitching, that seemed to be more than enough.

Luckily, the Pioneers tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 7-0.

Cortese cruised through the first six innings, retiring the Royals in order in five of the six innings.

In the seventh, the Pioneer defense committed two errors and three Cortese walks proved to be costly. The Royals scored five runs in the inning, although just one was earned.

Cortese finished the game allowing just two hits. He did walk four, but struck out 12.

Chad Mackay and Sean O’Connell each had two hits to lead the Pioneer offense. Mackay and Brayden Matheson each tripled, O’Connell had a double.

The Pioneer offense finally got going in the sixth, which was more than enough for Riley Horn.

MCC got off to a good start, scoring twice in the top of the first. They added two more in the fourth on a two-run double from Myles Wesener. But that 4-0 lead was all they could get going until the sixth.

In the sixth, the Pioneers sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring six runs on five hits, including doubles from Wesener and Brayden Matheson.

Wesener had a big game at the plate, going 3-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. The Pioneers had just seven hits as a team.

Horn was fantastic on the mound, allowing just two hits and two walks in the game. He struck out six in his six innings of work.

Brayden Matheson had a career game and the Pioneers enjoyed their best offensive output of the season.

Matheson was 4-4 at the plate, smacking three doubles and a three-run home run. He finished with an amazing nine RBIs, and also scored four runs, including three by his courtesy runner.

Matheson wasn’t the only one with a big day as the Pioneers pounded out 20 base hits, seven for extra bases.

Wesener and Zach Cortese each had three hits, both also doubled. Wesener scored four times and Cortese drove in two. Dillon Peterson, Brandon Kemp and Andy Scott also had multiple hit days.

There were 13 MCC players that had at least one at bat, 10 had base hits.

Ty Church breezed through five innings on the mound. He allowed just two base runners in the game, bot harmless singles. He struck out seven and threw just 60 pitches in five innings on the mound.

The final game of the series was pretty well over from the beginning.

The Pioneers scored five runs in the top of the first and never were challenged from there. They added four in the second, three in the third and then put up nine in the fourth.

The Pioneers again had most of their roster see time in the shortened game. This time 14 players had at bats, with nine picking up base hits.

Matheson continued his torrid day, going 2-2 with another home run, this one a solo shot. Cayden Napierala and Sean O’Connell also homered in the game as the Pioneers had seven extra base hits and six singles in the game.

Napierala finished 2-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored to lead the offense. Zach Cortese and Kemp were each 2-3 with two RBIs. Tler Reiz, Alan Ibanes and Andy Scott also drove in two runs apiece.

Michael Gahan was the recipient of all the run support on the mound. He threw all five innings, allowing three hits and walking two. He struck out seven in the win.
