Pioneers claim non-conference win over Dawson CC, 7-4
As far as the MonDak Conference or the NJCAA Region IX standings are concerned, last night’s game between the Miles Community College Pioneers and the Dawson Community College Bucs had no meaning.
But whenever the two rivals, separated by 75 miles, get together, there’s always at least bragging rights on the line.
And once again, the Pioneers got the better of the Bucs, winning 7-4 in the non-conference nine-inning game last night at Connors Stadium. The win moved the Pioneers to 26-8-1 on the season.
The Pioneers got a solid start out of Austin Tennant on the mound, and the bats of Myles Wesener and Zach Cortese carried the offense.
MCC got on the board in the top of the first when Cortese singled to center, scoring Wesener. Dawson answered with a run in the top of the second, but MCC had the answer in the bottom of the inning.
Wesener came to the plate with two outs in the second and smoked the 2-0 pitch over the left-field wall to break the tie.
The 2-1 lead held until the fifth, when Dillon Peterson hit a sac fly to score courtesy runner Tyler Reitz. MCC then took advantage of a Dawson error, scoring two unearned runs following the error at short.
After Tennant threw five solid innings, allowing just one run, he was relieved by Zach Shelstad, who gave up three runs, only one of which was earned, in the top of the seventh, which brought the score to 5-4.
Alan Ibanes put the game away in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run double. Tony Roberts shut the door on the mound, throwing two shutout innings to earn the save.
Cortese was 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Pioneer offense. Wesener and Brandon Kemp were each 2-4 and Ibanes finished with two RBIs.
Tennant earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on two hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out three.
The Pioneers are in action this weekend against MonDak foe Bismarck State. They will be in Miles City on Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m., and then the teams will head to Bismarck on Sunday.
The Pioneers are 12-2 in the MonDak Conference and are chasing their 14th consecutive conference title.
