Outlaws take 2 of 3 in South Dakota

The Miles City Outlaws varsity team swept Rapid City Post 320 on Saturday afternoon, but then dropped a nine-inning game to Sturgis on Sunday.

The Outlaws improved to 6-5 on the season. They will be hosting the Outlaw Invite this weekend at Tedesco Field. Times have not been announced, but the Outlaws will play twice on Saturday and Sunday.

In the first game against Rapid City, Brac Warren of the Outlaws and Derrick Brown of Rapid City combined for 23 strikeouts. The Outlaws scratched across a pair of late runs to take the 2-1 victory.

Warren allowed an unearned run in the third, coming off a walk and an error. In his other five innings of work, Rapid City never threatened to score again. He allowed one hit, just the one walk and struck out 11.

Brown was equally effective. The Outlaws threatened in the first and third innings, but Brown worked out of both jams.

In the top of the fifth, trailing 1-0, Dylan Munroe hit a two-out double and advanced to third on a dropped third strike that allowed Jared Harden to advance to first and the inning to continue. Munroe then scored on an error by the Rapid City catcher to tie the game at one.

The 1-1 score held until the top of the seventh, when Kyle Nielson singled, moved to third on an error and was driven in by Harden.

Casey Cole came in relief in the seventh, working around an error to earn the save.

Munroe and Nielson each had two hits and scored a run. Harden had the only other base hit of the game.

After both offenses were held in check in the first game, the offenses came alive in the second game, a 14-7 win for the Outlaws.

The Outlaws got the game started in a big way, sending 17 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring 11 runs on six hits. They took advantage of three walks and three Rapid City errors in the inning.

Rapid City outscored the Outlaws 7-3 from that point on, but they could not overcome the Outlaws explosion in the first.

Munroe and Harden each had two hits, including doubles. Rylee Peterson also doubled in the game.

Zach Allen took advantage of the big first inning, earning the win on the mound. He allowed seven runs on eight hits. Monroe threw two and one-third innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit and struck out three.

In the final game of the weekend, the Outlaws jumped out to a big lead, but couldn’t hold off Sturgis in a 14-13 Sturgis win.

The teams each scored single runs in the third, then the Outlaws scored seven in the fourth and four more in the fifth to build a 12-1 lead.

Sturgis answered with four in the bottom of the fifth, and after a single Outlaw run in the sixth, Sturgis scored three more in the bottom of the sixth to cut the score to 13-8.

Sturgis added three more in the bottom of the eighth and three in the ninth to complete the comeback.

The Outlaws were led offensively by Peterson, who went 3-4 with four RBIs. Jared Bellows went 3-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Harden, Cole and Nielson each had two hits in the loss.
