Moon Creek couple loses home to fire
Gene and Judith Griffith of the Moon Creek area west of Miles City had just gone to bed Saturday night when they smelled smoke. Since they had been using a wood stove earlier in the evening, they got up to check and saw smoke in the light fixtures in their living room. When Gene went outside, he saw smoke coming out of the roof. So he decided to check the attic from the access hatch.
When he saw the flames, he and Judith and the dog headed outside. Judith forgot her purse but did remember to grab her cellphone, so she could call the fire department. While the Griffiths had nothing but praise for the firefighters, they live some distance from town on Moon Creek. so by the time Custer County Rural Volunteer Fire Company arrived, their new home was a total loss.
Fortunately, the Griffiths had insurance and plan to begin rebuilding as soon as possible. In addition, Judith said that the response from people who heard about the fire has been “really overwhelming.” Murdoch’s gave them a discount to replace their wardrobe.
“People should be very proud of this town,” she said, in reference to the generosity and kindness shown to her and her husband.
The greatest loss was the “wall of mounts” that represented her husband’s 50 years of hunting. He will start working on replacing them while they begin to rebuild.
