MCC teams fall at Western Wyo.
The Miles Community College basketball teams were in Rock Springs, Wyo., on Wednesday night for a Region IX double-header against Western Wyoming.
The Lady Pioneers played well through most of their game, but ended up losing 72-63 to the Region IX leaders. The Pioneers lost 74-60.
Both teams dropped to 13-14 on the season. The MCC women are 4-9 in the Region IX North Sub-Region. The Pioneers are at 6-7, along with Western Wyoming and Central Wyoming at fourth in the Region.
MCC will be at home on Saturday when they host Little Big Horn College. The women’s game starts at 3 p.m., followed by the men at 5.
In the women’s game on Wednesday, the Lady Pioneers kept the game within 10 points throughout. There were nine lead changes and eight ties in the game.
“I thought we played really, really well for 36 minutes,” Lady Pioneers Head Coach Liz Lewis said. “And then we broke down at the end. We had way too many turnovers and gave up too many offensive rebounds in the final minutes. But we played really well outside that.”
Three Lady Pioneers, Ashley Malmquist, Jaycin Tini and Ashley Hildreth played all 40 minutes in the contest. The Lady Pioneers were again without one of their leading scorers, Tess Blaquiere.
MCC shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and ended up shooting 47 percent from the field in the game. They had a tough night at the line, hitting just 12 of 21 free throws. And they turned the ball over 24 times.
Malmquist led four Lady Pioneers in double figures with 16 points. Shelby Weeks had 14, Petra Lumpert had 13 and Tini added 12.
For the Pioneers, they could not overcome a poor shooting game, especially in the first half.
“We shot poorly,” Pioneers Head Coach Chase Tait said. “We have to start putting the ball in the basket. That’s two of the last three games we’ve shot around 30 percent. We got off to a good start, but then we went a 14 minute stretch where only had three baskets.”
The Pioneers shot 28 percent in the first half, falling behind 37-26 at the break. They did better in the second half, shooting 35 percent but couldn’t overcome Western Wyoming shooting 46 percent for the game.
Jonathan Dogbo had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Pioneers. Ryan McCarty had four three-opinters and finished with 14 points.
