Lester E. Schied


Lester E. Schied, former Miles City resident, died in Arizona on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013.

He was born in Long Lake, S.D., on Feb. 27, 1925. When he was five years of age, his family moved to Montana where he resided until 2002, when he moved to Arizona.

He served in the Army from January 1944 through May 1946 in Europe. 

On May 18, 1947, he and Iona Holzwarth were married. He farmed in the Kinsey area for 20 years, then moved to Miles City where he worked at Fort Keogh Experimental Station, retiring at the age of 60 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Schied loved to travel once they were off the farm, and roamed around the United States and many countries overseas. They resided in Apache Junction, Ariz., for the past 11 years.

Mr. Schied is survived by his wife of 66 years, Iona; three daughters, Peggy (Dennis) Knizner of Alexandria, Va., Janet (Tom) Erickson of Miles City and Cathy (Joe) Schroeder of Haysville, Kan.; two sons, Lester D. (Penny) Schied of Grand Junction, Colo., and David (Rebecca) Schied of Chandler, Ariz.; one sister, Alice Tullous of Arizona; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Marilyn Henry; his parents, Martin and Hulda Spitzer Scheid; his sisters, Irene Kemp, Esther Strending and Geraldine Bowen; and his brothers, Fred, Rolland and Harley Scheid.

Services were Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, in Apache Junction, Ariz.
