KC Barbeque Society biggest of its kind

The KCBS was established in the mid-1980s and is the biggest society of barbeque enthusiasts in the world, according to Simmons.

KCBS has more than 19,000 members and expects to have 20,000 before the end of the year.

Last weekend there were KCBS-sanctioned barbeques in Kansas, Wisconsin, California, South Dakota, North Carolina, South Carolina, Missouri, Maryland, Colorado, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Georgia and Nebraska. There were only two judge-training classes.

Besides Miles City, this weekend there are sanctioned barbeques in Illinois, Arkansas, Arizona, California, North Carolina, New York, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kansas, New Hampshire, Colorado, Michigan, Manitoba, Alberta and Perugia, Italy. There are three judge-training classes nationwide.

Certified judges can then judge barbeques anywhere, said Terri Newby of the Miles City Area Chamber of Commerce.

Among the judges at the Miles City event will be meteorologist Ed McIntosh of KTVQ in Billings. He is already certified to judge.

Simmons said there will be more than 450 competitions this year, including eight in other countries. For next year they already have 22 international competitions scheduled.

Simmons will be attending more than 200 contests.

Miles City already has made an impression on Simmons.

“What impresses me is there’s a lot of people willing and eager to help. Trudy and her group have put together a well-organized competition with excellent attention to detail,” he said.
