Herzog chosen for 21st Annual Badlands Bowl

Custer County District High School senior Ben Herzog joins an elite fraternity of former Cowboy football players to be chosen to represent Montana in the 21st Annual Knights of Columbus Badlands Bowl to be held in June.

Herzog was chosen by the Montana coaching staff to play defensive back in the all-star game. This year’s game will be held June 21st in Dickinson, N.D.

“I’m very proud and humbled to have been selected to represent Miles City and Montana in this great game,” Herzog said. “I can’t wait to start practicing with the guys and play.”

Herzog was a three-time Eastern A all-conference defensive back for the Cowboys. He also set nearly every passing record in Cowboy history. He may also see some snaps in the Badlands Bowl at quarterback, backing up Bozeman’s Will Weyer.

Weyer helped lead the Bozeman Hawks to the Class AA title last fall, leading what many to believe is one of the best AA teams in recent memory.

Bozeman will have seven players represented in the Badlands Bowl this year, including Hunter Gappmayer (running back), John D’Agostino (Bozeman), Jack Hape (offensive line), Grant Collins (linebacker), Chandler D’Agostino (defensive back) and Wyatt David (defensive back).

Class A state champion had three players chosen; receiver Mick Paffhausen, offensive lineman Donovan Hucke and linebacker Troy Scott.

Class B champion Missoula Loyola had receiver Zach Hollenbach and Class C champion Ennis had receiver Connor Sullivan and center Derek Wham named to the team.

Great Falls CMR had four players named, Kalispell Glacier had three and Billings Skyview had two players.

Other area players named to the team included Billings Central offensive lineman Ben D’Alton, Colstrip defensive lineman Tucker Yates, Laurel linebacker Matthew Martinez-Tillman and Wibaux tight end Chase Bertelsen.

Of the 34 players chosen by the Montana coaching staff, 19 came from Class AA, eight from Class A, four from Class B and three from Class C.

The Montana coaching staff comprises Head Coach Tory Purcell (Bozeman) and assistant coaches Levi Wesche (Bozeman), Mike Ludwig (Laurel), Jason Christenson (Havre), Clint Layng (Boulder) and Jay Fredrickson (Ennis).

Montana leads the series with a 15-5 record against North Dakota. Montana won last year 43-29 in Miles City.
