Expectations high for experienced Cowboys

The Custer County District High School Cowboy basketball team was all set to open their season earlier this week against the Dickinson High Midgets. But with bad roads across eastern Montana, that game was postponed. Unless that game gets rescheduled for next week, the Cowboys will have to wait until next Friday night to open their season at home against Hardin.

"I think we're in need of a game," Cowboys third-year Head Coach Houston Finn said. "And we're still ready for one. We're competing hard in practice. they've been bringing their intensity every day and working hard to have a breakout season."

The Cowboys are about due for a breakout season, and could very well have the team to do it.

The Cowboys return all but one starter from last season and their entire bench.

"The Eastern A is extremely competitive," Finn said. "But with the experience we have, I'm optimistic that we can compete with the best of them."

the Cowboys will once again be led by senior Brac Warren. The 6'3 forward averaged over 13 points per game last season, earning All-State honors.

"He had an exceptional year last year," Finn said. "And he's picking up where he left off. He's a nice player."

Warren is joined by fellow seniors Troy Burk, Kyle Collins and Lane Woosley. Woosley averaged over six points per game last year, providing the Cowboys with solid three-point shooting. Burk was a top defensive stopper at the guard position and Collins came on strong at the end of the year, giving the Cowboys a spark off the bench.

While the Cowboys have four seniors, the most in a number of years, they will also be a young squad.

Juniors Timmy Regan, Austin Stradley and Brett Keith were all major contributors last season. Regan averaged nine points per game last season and Stradley stepped in nicely when Regan went out with a knee injury. Keith was a consistent performer for the Cowboys last year and adds another athleticism to the forward position with Warren.

The Cowboys also have three sophomores in Gavin Gundlach, Conner Torstenbo and Carson Barnosky that will add depth to their team. Gundlach and Torstenbo saw varsity time last year as freshmen.

"It's competitive every day at practice," Finn said. "They compete every day for time and starting positions. And it's making them all better. They're all going to be needing some minutes, they're earning it."

The Cowboys finished last season with a 7-15 record and played in the Eastern A Divisional consolation game for the second straight year.

This year, the Cowboys will contend with a very good Glendive team at the top of the Eastern A.

"Obviously Laurel and Glendive should be the top two preseason," Finn said. "Laurel lost a lot of kids, but they just filter them in through their program. They're both well coached teams. It's an all-out or bust for Glendive. This is their year that they can really shine. Any time you can have a talented 6'10 kid, it's tough. And you can never count out Central. They graduated everyone out, but they're competiive and they know how to win games. I'm very optimistic that we can make some noise and be playing in the championship game in the Eastern A."
