Cowgirls win 3rd straight, top Hardin 11-1

It’s official, the Custer County District High School Cowgirl softball team is on a winning streak.

The Cowgirls won their third straight game, beating Hardin 11-1 last night on the road. For a Cowgirl program that has never won more than six games in a season, the three-game winning streak is the longest in school history.

Last night’s win also marked the second straight game the Cowgirls won by the 10-run mercy rule.

The Cowgirls moved to 4-2 overall on the season, but more importantly, they are now 4-1 at the midway point of the Eastern A schedule. They have conference wins over Laurel, Glendive, Sidney and Hardin. Their lone loss came against Billings Central in the season-opener.

Last night in Hardin, the Cowgirls never scored more than three runs in an inning, but they scored at least two in five of the six innings.

Gabby Richards came through with a two-run single in the top of the first, scoring Lauren Wolfe-Petroff and Sierra Niedge. In the second, Madissen Hill doubled and Jenna Swope was hit by a pitch. Niedge brought both runners in to give the Cowgirls a 4-0 lead.

The Cowgirls pushed their lead to 7-0 on a pair of doubles from Richards and Kristen Selk in the third. They also took advantage of a costly error by the Lady Bulldogs that allowed two runs to score.

After Hardin scored their lone run in the bottom of the third, the Cowgirls went scoreless in the top of the fourth.

But they made up for it in the fifth and sixth, scoring two runs in each inning to bring up the mercy rule.

Hill, a freshman, led the offense with a 3-4 effort, including a double. Wolfe-Petroff and Richards each went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs apiece. Niedge and Swope also drove in a pair of runs.

Wolfe-Petroff was dominant in the circle again, allowing just three hits, walking none and hitting one batter. She finished with eight strikeouts and was aided by a Cowgirl defense that committed just one error.

The Cowgirls will look to keep their streak alive when they host Glendive on Saturday afternoon. First pitch for the varsity game is set for 1 p.m., and the JV game will start at 11 a.m.
