In their final regular-season match, the Cowgirls rallied for a four-game win over Hardin to clinch the second seed at the upcoming Eastern A Divisional Tournament in Glendive, and the bye that goes with that seed.

“It was great to get the win,” said Cowgirl Shaylee Singleton, one of seven seniors honored before the game. “Especially winning in our final home game.”

The Cowgirls (14-14, 7-3) will not have to play Thursday night and will open the tournament on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m., against either Hardin or Glendive.

“I think it’s good for us to have the bye,” Singleton said. “It gives us a good chance to get the tournament started right, not worrying about that first game. It’s been a while since we’ve gone in with a bye, so that’s good.”

On Friday night, the Cowgirls lost the first game 25-23.

The Cowgirls trailed 19-13 late in the first set, but rallied to tie the score at 19 and again at 21. They took a 22-21 lead on a Hardin hitting error, but Hardin was able to retake the lead and pull off the win.

The second game was close with seven ties and three lead changes early on. The Cowgirls took control in the middle of the set, but Hardin wasn’t going away quietly.

After a Cowgirl hitting error, their lead was shrunk to 21-19. But Catherine Nalewaja stepped behind the service line and served an ace, followed by a Shaylee SIngelton kill to set up game point. Another great serve from Nalewaja gave the Cowgirls a 25-19 win to even the match.

In the third game, the Cowgirls took control early and led throughout the game. They led by as many as seven and cruised to a 25-20 win. Kadie Heinle put an emphatic end to the game with a big kill on game point.

In the fourth and final set, the Cowgirls trailed early but took the lead for good at 9-8 on a Singleton kill.

As in the first couple sets, the Cowgirls weren’t able to completely shake the Lady Bulldogs.

Hardin tied the game as late as 15-15 and cut the score to 20-18.

Fittingly, the match was sealed on a Singleton kill to win 25-21.

Singleton was outstanding in her final home game. She led the team with 19 kills and also served seven aces. Junior Kadie Heinle also had a big night at the net with 11 kills and two blocks.

Catherine Nalewaja had 20 assists and Makena Ellingson had 17. Tori Swope and Stevie Murphy led the defense with 24 and 21 digs, respectively.

The Cowgirls swept both Hardin and Glendive in the regular season. Their three conference losses came at the hands of Billings Central, twice, and they split with Sidney.

“I think we’re playing pretty good going into the tournament,” Singleton said. “We think we’re going to win and we finished strong. Hopefully we’ll continue that and get back to the state tournament.

The Cowgirl JV team lost in four games to end their season. They lost the first game 25-23 and then won the second game 25-15. Hardin then took the next two games 16-14 and 15-12.

The Cowgirls had 33 kills in the match, led by Jenna Swope with 10, Halie Warren had seven and Hadleigh Miller had six. Ellingson had 14 assists.

Defensively, the Cowgirls had 97 digs led by Swope with 31 and Stevie Murphy and Ashlie Larson each had 20. Warren and Miller each had a block. Swope finished with eight aces.

The Cowgirls won the first two games 25-17 and 25-20 before falling 15-5. They bounced back to win the match with a 15-6 win in the fourth game.

The Cowgirls had 31 kills, led by Sarah Moore with 10, and Kylee Licht and Tori Ogolin each with six. Ogolin also had 17 assists. Licht and Maddissen Hill each served four aces.
