Cowboys get off to slow start at State

The Custer County District High School Cowboy wrestling team had a rough start to the Class A State Meet in Billings.

In first-round action, the Cowboys sent just one wrestler through to the quarterfinals, and that was due to a bye.

Ethan Schaff received a bye through the first round at 106 and will face Cody Warner of Frenchtown in the quarterfinals.

The other four Cowboys each were pinned early in the first period of their first-round matches.

Grayson Brenna of Havre pinned Brandon Blumhage in 1:13. His was the longest match of the first round for the Cowboys. Blumhagen will take on Paul Allsop of Corvallis in consolation bracket.

Josh Sundgren (160) was pinned by Cody Johnson of Sidney in 29 seconds, Zach Brown pinned Caid Dickman (220) in 55 seconds and Cordell Lott pinned Cord Murray (285) in 56 seconds.

Sundgren will face Braden Loveless of Stevensville, Dickman will face Kordale Behner of Stevensville and Murray will face Cameron Carter of Belgrade in loser-out action.

The four Cowboys who lost in the first round will have to win four matches to earn all-state honors.

Through the first-round, favorites Havre and Sidney are at the top of the pack with 56 and 42 points, respectively. Columbia Falls and Hardin are just behind with 34 points.

The All-Class state tournament will run through tomorrow afternoon. The championship bouts are slated for 4 p.m., at the Billings Metra.
