Colleen P. Malek

 

Colleen P. Malek, 83, of Miles City, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at the Friendship Villa in Miles City.

Mrs. Malek was born on March 2, 1930, in Miles City, the daughter of Claude and Violet Stepper Pickard. The family lived in Sumatra, Mildred, Plevna, Ismay and Harlowton where she graduated as the valedictorian of her class.

After graduation, she attended the University of Montana in Missoula for one year. She worked various secretarial jobs throughout the next few years, eventually taking a position with the Veterans Affairs Hospital. She was with the V.A. Hospital for more than 30 years, receiving several awards for her hard work until she retired there at the age of 55. 

She and Craig “Scotty” MacKenzie were married and to this union her only child, Larry, was born. 

She later married Dewey Malek. Mrs. Malek was an exceptional listener and always had time to visit with her friends and family. During her retirement years she enjoyed music, dancing, playing Bonco and interacting with her many friends.

Her survivors include two sisters: Alice Janssen of Miles City and Vena Fitzgerald of Sedro Woolley, Wash.; her sister-in-law: Mildred Pickard of Casper, Wyo.; her nephews: Duane (Debbie) Maier of Miles City, Doug (Judy) Maier of Chandler, Ariz., Bill Janssen of Volborg, Larry (Janet) Janssen of Camarillo, Calif., Wayne Janssen of Bakersfield, Calif.,  Mark (Lanae) Pickard of Casper, Wyo., Thomas (Julie) Pickard of Houston, Texas, Pat Tracy of Seattle, Wash., and Steve and Dean Pickard of Austin, Texas; her nieces: Laurie (Duane) Claypool of Miles City, Linda (Terry) Saylor of Keizer, Ore., Marilyn (Paul) Barella of Casper, Wyo., Lori (Fred) Smith of Oak Harbor, Wash., Julie Tasakos and Debbie (Phil) Merrell of Seattle, Wash., Connie (Dale) Merrell of Boise, Idaho, Kathy Tracy of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Allison Pickard of Denver, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Larry MacKenzie; her brothers, Bill and Claude Pickard; her sister, Betty Maier; and her nephew, Dennis Pickard.

Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow at a later date in the Custer County Cemetery.
